Purpose: Second-Language acquisition directly supports the fundamental concepts of the Middle Years Program of IB: holistic learning, intercultural awareness, and communication.

Curriculum: New York State has adopted two of the five national standards for Languages Other Than English (L.O.T.E.).
They are:
1.    Students will communicate (listen, speak, read, and write) in a language other than English.
2.    Students will demonstrate cross-cultural understandings.
Students will work with the textbook ¡Aventura! to begin to cover the topics that correlate to the 15 themes given by New York State.

Grading:     60% Assessments
Examples include but are not limited to tests and quizzes that measure the skills of listening, speaking reading and writing.
                     40% Performance
Examples include but are not limited to homework and class activities that help to develop the skills to be measured.
Please note that the weighting of individual assessment and performance grades will vary according to factors such as complexity and time on task.

Assignments may occasionally be graded on accuracy, but completion and effort mean more at this level.  Students, please do homework on your own.  Many students confuse cooperative learning with copying.  Copying of any homework will result in a zero grade for that assignment.

Late work:
A ten percent deduction will be given to all unexcused late work  (homework, assignments, projects).  All missed work is to be completed by the end of each 5-week marking period. Students are responsible for making up any missed work.  Missing grades will count as zeros in the grade book.

Homework Policy:
Homework is a powerful tool that will help reinforce the skills that the students learn in class.  Homework assignments will be meaningful and will coincide with the day’s lesson, upcoming quizzes and tests.
•    Homework will be given daily with the exception of Fridays.
•    Students are responsible for making up missed work when absent.
•    Homework will be checked and recorded daily.  Homework is counted under the performance category.
•    All homework assignments will be corrected for accuracy and given positive feedback.

Required Material:
1.)    3-ring binder (1 ½ inch, recommended just for Spanish)
2.)    Dividers for binder
3.)    Loose-leaf lined paper
4.)    Composition book (9 ¾” X 7 ½”)
5.)    Pens (blue or black only)
6.)    #2 pencils/ hand-held pencil sharpener

2.)    Be on time to class.
3.)    No food, drinks, or gum in the classroom.
4.)    Be responsible (bring all required materials to class).
