What is a rhyme?

A rhyme is when two words have the same ending sound but different beginning sounds. The endings of the words do not necessarily have to be spelled the same for them to sound the same. Take a look at the examples below of different words that rhyme. Notice the ending and beginning sounds.

These examples have different beginning sounds but the same ending sound. Notice that the ending of both words is spelled the same.

cat - bat
map - clap
bring - ring
hit - fit
fun - sun
car - star


Now these examples have the sound ending sound even though the endings are spelled differently.

great - straight
tough - buff
though - know
might - write
won - sun
