Project #7: Puzzle Maker and Microsoft Paint Project

This project involved using the Puzzle Maker tool found at http://puzzlemaker.school.discovery.com/ to create a puzzle that could be used by students in a classroom.  I created a word search that was themed around Earth Day.  I used the list of words that Puzzle Maker offered from their word lists.  Once you know how to create the different types of puzzles and copy them into Microsoft Word, the puzzle can be printed off to be used by the students.  I printed mine off and switched with a partner to test my puzzle.  Once I had my puzzle in Word, I had to create two different columns for all of my words to fit on the same page.  Then, I hit the Print Screen button to take a picture of the puzzle and copied it into Paint.  After the picture was in Paint I could crop and edit the picture.  I saved the image as a JPEG so that the file would not be too big.  Lastly, I uploaded my webpage and the word search using WS_FTP.
The Puzzle Maker website offers different vocab lists to choose from or you can create your own to give you students a good review tool.  I have used other programs to create word searches but this site is particuarly nice because it has a wide variety of puzzles to choose from and it is so easy to use.  The students could actually create their own puzzles to swap with each other.  The puzzle I created would probably best be used by sixth graders because there are a lot of different words.  This would be the perfect level for them because it would be challenging but fun because all of the words are relavent to them.  With the variety of different puzzle options available they can be used for such a variety of different topics.
