The uses of SER (to be)

Below you will find an explanation of when SER is used. In Spanish, the verb 'estar' also means to be. However, right now, we will focus on the uses of 'ser' only.

1. Hour, day, and date

¿Qué hora es? - What time is it?

Son las tres. - It's three o'clock.

¿Qué día es hoy? - What day is today?

Hoy es martes.   - Today's Tuesday.

¿Qué fecha es hoy?   - What's the date today?

Es el veintisiete de mayo.   - It's May 27th.

2. To express place of origin

¿De dónde eres tú? - Where are you from?

Soy de los Estados Unidos. - I'm from the United States.

3. Ser is used to express nationality

Soy americana.

Ella es guatemalteca.
