The Different Sounds of Plural -s

The plural is added to nouns to make them plural.  From one thing to two or more things.
ex) singular noun - CAT     plural noun - CATS

Nouns take two different endings when they become plural.  Those endings or suffixes are -s and -es.
The -s ending is applied to all plural nouns except when the noun already ends in an s or when the word ends in a
z, cha, shh or ja sound.
ex) cat - cats             dog - dogs
kiss - kisses         witch - witches
dish - dishes        judge - judg

The sounds of plural -s

There are (3) sounds of the plural -s.
They are -s, -z, or -iz

But how do we know which sound goes with each word?

We know what sound goes with what word by knowing if the LAST SOUND of the word vibrates or does not vibrate.
Place your hand on your adam's apple or voice box.
Say the following words:
1. cat
2. duck
3. dog
4. bird
5. bat
Does the last sound vibrate?  Check your answers!

If the last sound vibrates the -s will sound like a -z.
If the last sound does not vibrate the -s will sound like an -s.
If the last sound ends in an -s,
z, cha, shh or ja sound, the -s will sound like -iz
Directions: Now that we know
what sounds vibrate or not, make the
following words plural and place them in
the box that matches the correct ending.
