Task #1:I want you to write a half page about the preconceived notions that you have about Afghanistan and it’s citizens. What comes to mind when you first think of the word Afghanistan? What does the Taliban mean to you?
Now I want you to go to this wikipedia website and read about the history of Afghanistan. Start at the title “Reigns of Nadir Shah and Zahir Shah (1929-1973)” to “2000s”.
Task #2 continued: Where else in history has this idea come up about a country being destroyed and a governmental force coming in and promising change? How would you feel if you were living in Afghanistan when the Taliban came in with all of their bravado? How do you feel about the Afghan people now after reading these sources? In total, you should have at least a page for Task #1. When you are finished, go here.
Now I want you to look at this short page of the Taliban. Task #2: Between these two sources, I want you to write about how this all connects back to the book. Keep in mind that the Afghani people were desperate for a “savior” to rescue them from famine and poverty, something that the Taliban promised to the people.
