Afghani women were excluded from many activities while the Taliban was the ruling power.  Look through this chronology of women in Afghanistan’s history and watch this video.

Note a few important events that shocked or amazed you.  Now look at the images on this page and talk about what you see.  Why does one woman not have on the burqa? What do you think the burqa represents to these women?

Talk about how the women in A Thousand Splendid Suns were treated.  What was valued in women in the book?  What stereotypes seemed to be exaggerated in the book compared to some of the knowledge that you have gained?  What right have women gained since the end of the Taliban regime?
