NETS for Teachers

After reading the National Educational Technology Standards, also known as NETS, I now know that there are six curriculum and content area standards.   Each individual standard is explained in great detail and is also broken down into more detail by the use of performance indicators.   Each performance indicator clearly explains what a teacher can do to help the students achieve each standard. While using these standards teachers can apply their knowledge of technology to incorporate technology in their classroom.  Technology is very important to have in a classroom because then the teacher is able to teach and guide the students so as they too can become efficient with technology.   It is important for students and teachers alike to be competent with technology in this ever advancing world.
One Standard that I feel is important to me as a future educator is standard one, "Technology operations and Concepts."   This standard states that, "Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts."  This means that teachers should be able to demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology.   I feel that this is important because students learn by example, so if they see that their teacher is technologically inclined, then they too are more eager to learn.   This Standard also explains that teachers should be able to demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.   I feel that this is important because with technology advancing as quickly as it is today, teachers must be able and willing to learn the latest technological advances as they come along, so that they can pass this knowledge onto their students.
An example that I will use in my classroom that demonstrates this standard would be showing the students how to use the different Microsoft Office programs through a demonstration.   I would show the students how to use Microsoft Excel in order for them to make tables, spread sheets and graphs so that they can use this technology in the future for presentations.  I would show the students how to use Microsoft Word so that the students can use this program to write papers in the future.  I would teach students to use Microsoft Power Point so that they would know how to create a slide show for a presentation.  Another example that I will use in my classroom that demonstrates this standards would be using the Internet to show the class content and age appropriate websites.   This is a valuable lesson because it teaches them how they can accesss important information while using the Internet.

Similar to the the NETS for teachers, the NETS for students has six main categories each with a general description of the standards, along with a more detailed analysis of specific performance indicators.   The performance indicators give examples of ways that each standard could be met.   Just as with the teachers standards, I think that it is important for the students to become more familiar with the technology.
The standard that I feel is most important is Standard three, "Technology Productivity Tools."  This standard states that, "Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity."  I feel that this is most important because students should use the tools provided to do their work to the best of their ability.   This standard also states, "Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, prepare publications, and produce other creative works."   I feel that this is important because as a teacher, I always want my students to be as productive as possible.   Also I feel that with the use of technology the students will be able to more efficiently organize and display their work.
One activity that I would use in my classroom would be to have my students create a Virtual Field Trip on a Science topic that they are studying at the time.   This will involve researching the project on the Internet, and making a power-point using Microsoft Office.   Another activity that students can do that would display proficiency in standard 3 would be to have the class create a class website that they would be in charge of updating weekly with information pertaining to what we are doing in class.
