Transcript of Christmas Cookies Video
In my house we make Christmas cookies every year. We use cookie cutters
in the shapes of angels, Christmas trees, snowmen, stars, and candy
canes. We decorate them with icing and fun colored sprinkles.
These cookies go back to mumming which was a Christmas tradition in
colonial areas in England. In mumming, Christmas stories were acted out
abd food was used to helps depict the stories. Yule dows were cut-outs
made in this tradition, often in the shape baby Jesus.
Also, in the 1800s, Pennsylvania dutch children created large cutout
cookies as window decoration. Around this same time, Yule dows became
popular again and were called Yule dollies. They were made with tin
cutters and shaped like people, and decorated with icing.
Then in the 1840s, Santa became associated with Christmas and dollies
representing him. Some of these cookies were so beautifully decorated
that they weren’t actually meant to be eaten much like today’s
gingerbread houses.
Around Christmas time, many different families practice multiple
traditions, like these Christmas cookies, which come from all different
cultures.
