Letter to Parents/Guardians
Dear Parents/Guardians of Miss Cook's ESL Students,
Your child's ESL classroom experience is meant to enhance his/her English in the 4 language skills: speaking, reading, writing, and listening.
After practicing these skills in the ESL classroom, your child will be
able to use these skills in other content area classes such as ELA,
Math, and Science.
At the end of each year, your
child will be taking state tests in ELA and Math. If your child appears
to be struggling in either of these subject areas (or any subject
area), please encourage your student to come in after school to receive
help from myself or the content area in question. I would be glad to
help in any way that I can.
Also at the end of the year your
student will be taking the state test for ESL (NYSESLAT). The purpose
of this test is to to test your child's proficiency level in English.
There are 4 levels in which an ESL student can be placed: Beginner,
Intermediate, Advanced, Proficient. It is possible for your child to
test out of this class. If they do test out, they will no longer have
to receive ESL services (if you so desire) when he/she becomes
proficient in the English language.
I hope that this page has
answered any questions that you may have about the ESL classroom. If
you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at
anytime. My contact information is located on the Index Page of this
website.
Thank you and I am sure that we will have a successful year together!
Sincerely,
Miss Cook
