Why we went:

Sacred Heart began its Mission of the Heart trips to Don Juan, Dominican Republic, in August 2006.  The purpose of the trip was to stay in the small community and help them build a new church. Along with this missionary work, the trip became an aye opening experience for many, who learned what it was like to live in a house with no electricity or running water.  All of the first year pilgrims came back with a new appreciation and understanding of the phrase, "money can't buy happiness."  Sacred Heart has sent 7 groups since the first trip to help build more churches and schools around Don Juan.  We have become quite close with the members of the Don Juan community and continue to learn and grow through our experiences there. The first trip also sprung a project through Sacred Heart with the Taller Santa Maria Josefa Rossello School in Don Juan.  Through this project, members of the congregation sponsor a student at the school, providing them with a breakfast and lunch each day.  For more information on the trip, check out the Mission From the Heart Blog.
