Read the following examples of cognates and listen to the pronunciation to see what they sound like.

USAR= to use to use
IMAGINARIA= imaginary  imaginary
LAS CLASES= the classes classes
REPRESENTAR= to represent represent
PROBLEMAS= problems problem


Look at the words and their meanings above. What do you notice about each of the words and their meanings????

Correct! Each of the words look similar to their meanings.

These are called cognates.

The book definition of a cognate is two words that have a common origin. For the purpose of this acitivy, we will say that words that sound/look the same are cognates.
