My EDU 314 Reflection

When I was first told that I would be taking a technology course, I felt really good about it, since I know my way
around a computer pretty well. Although I didn’t have too much trouble with this course, I learned that I should never
feel like I know everything. I still have a lot to learn, about computers as well as myself, but this course has taught me a lot.

I have always been able to pick up computer skills very quickly, so I thought this course would be fairly easy
for me. I learned quickly not to overestimate myself. While I was familiar with some of the programs that we would be
using, such as Word, Publisher, and Google, I was very unfamiliar with some of the main programs that we used,
such as Nvu and Filezilla. I found myself having some difficulty with these new programs at first and got
extremely aggravated with trying to create my own website.

My biggest accomplishment in this course was using Nvu and Filezilla in order to create my own website on
the Cortland website. Website creation is one thing that I was not familiar with before I began this course, and I feel
that I am very comfortable with the process now. Adding pictures, links to other website and links to other pages
on my website are just some of the things that I am now able to do with relative ease. The process of ensuring that
the pictures were in the correct format was one thing that I had trouble with. Another thing was making sure that I had
every file in the correct location to ensure that they would end up in the same place. Although I had trouble with these
programs in the beginning, I feel confident in my ability to successfully use them now.

A large part of this course was helping one another if they were having difficulty and asking a class mate any
questions that you may have. I feel that this is a large part of learning in this class as well as learning in any class in
general. Mainly, we would be asking the person next to us if they could check our website to make sure that all of the links
and pictures were working. We would also ask them how to complete a specific task or if they knew what we could
possibly be doing wrong. I believe that you can learn a lot from a teacher, but you can learn even more from one another.

Taking this course was not what I expected it to be, it was so much better. I learned not only about technology,
but about myself. The skills that I learned in this course will be great to teach to children in my classroom. They are
becoming much more technologically savvy now and we need to be able to keep up with them and teach them in a way
that is more familiar to them. Also, if we can teach children to never give up on what they are learning, they will become
much more confident in themselves in all aspects of life.
