Classroom Expectations and
Grading Policies
English
as a Second Language (ESL)
Miss
Sydoriw
Learning a second language will be a
continuous process; you will not learn the entire language in one year.
Just as it took time to learn your native language, you will learn
English over a period of time.
Classroom
Expectations
- Be prepared with classroom
materials and homework everyday.
- Be on time for class.
- Be respectful to the teacher, your
fellow students, and our classroom.
- Participate in classroom activities
and make your learning meaningful.
Attendance
Policy
- You are required to be in class and
arrive on time everyday.
- Excessive absences and or
tardiness will affect your success in the class and it may impact your
grade. Illness, legal excuses, or family emergencies are acceptable and
understandable.
- If you know you are going to miss a
class, quiz, test, or assignment, please let me know ahead of time so
we can make arrangements for you to make it up. If you are absent, you
need to find out what you missed (class notes, homework, assignment,
quizzes, etc.).
- Missed work can be made up with me
after school or during your free periods.
- Any work that is not made up by the
agreed upon time will result in a zero.
- Work may NOT be made up if the
absence is due to skipping class.
Materials
- Please bring everyday! You will
each have your own mailbox so you can leave your materials in the room
if you would like. This way, there is NO excuse for you to forget your
materials.
- Pen and/or pencil
- Book and workbook
- One subject notebook
- 2 pocket folder
- Marble composition book
- Native language/English dictionary
or translater
- If you have problems with getting
any of these materials, please let me know.
Grading Policy
30% Tests and Quizzes
- There will be approximately 3-7 per
marking period.
- They will be announced at least one
class in advance. I do not believe in giving "pop quizzes" so I will
never surprise with you a quiz or test.
- We will review in class before the
test. I will not put any information that we have not covered in class
on the test.
10% Speaking and Class
Participation
- Individually graded.
- Includes discussions,
questions/answers, prepardness, attitude and cooperation.
20% Journal and Writing
- Journal entries and reflections.
- You will have at least two journals a
week to complete. I will give you the topic to write about and you must
write at least three paragraphs.
- These will be collected and graded at
the end of each marking period.
- We will also be writing essays. You
will have plenty of time to complete these and we will go over them in
depth in class.
20% Projects
- We will be doing a few projects
throughout the year. Some projects must be done individually while
others in pairs or groups.
- Some projects will need to be worked
on outside of class while others may be completed in class.
- I will give you plenty of time to
complete the projects.
- Projects must be turned in the date
they are due. If it is handed in after the period it is due, 10 points
will be taken off for each day it is late.
20% Homework
- Scored depending on the length of
the assignment, and partial credit is awarded.
- May be collected and graded at any
time.
- Must be finished BEFORE entering
class. If it is handed in after the period it is due, you will only get
half credit. This means that if the assignment is worh a total of 10
points, the highest grade you can receive for that particular
assignment is 5 points and that is only if it is well done.
- No credit will be awarded for
sharing work.
