Quotes to Use When Writing Your Editorial
In the editorial 7.5 Million Kids on Facebook Are at Risk,
you saw that the writer
used quotes to support their argument. Research is very
important when writing an editorial because it makes for a stronger
case. When you write your own editorial, you will have to do some of
your own research (you will most likely do this on the Internet).
Below, a few quotes have been
provided for you to use in your editorial. Please feel free to use one
or more of the following quotes. You don't have to use them if you don't want to, it is just for some ideas and a starting point. If you would like, you may also use a
quote(s) from 7.5 Million Kids on Facebook Are at Risk or any of the other editorials that we used in previous exercises of the lesson.
In favor of (support) Facebook:
"Facebook
is a great way for kids to stay in touch with friends, grandparents, or
cousins that live across the country. Facebook lets kids simply share
what is going on in their lives so that friends and relatives can be
connected and involved." -Tony Bradley, PC World
"If you
live far away from family and friends, Facebook makes staying in touch
quick and easy. Use the video chat feature, presuming your computer has
a webcam has a webcam and microphone, to talk to people on your
friend list and you may save money on your phone bill. If you frequently
post status updates, people who live far away can stay current on your
day activities when they otherwise would not be." -Lillian Webster,
Demand Media
"Facebook is far less shady than a lot of
other online destinations that kids can get to just fine without
parental consent. Some parents should be happy that their kids are on
Facebook rather than wandering other parts of the Web." -Tom Bradley PC

Against Facebook
"Facebook can be a huge
time waster and distract people from doing more productive things. More
than 6 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each day (worldwide)."
-Jennifer Brocato
"A study released this week revealed that 47% of Facebook user have swear words on their pages." -Pete Cashmore, CNN News
"One
negative of Facebook is that it could take time away from other
activities. Children may lose interest in sports, reading books, or just
playing outside. It could damage children's "real life" social skills,
as they spend most of their time socializing online." -Rachel Carpenter
"Students need to use caution when deeming appropriate
material to post after a night of being with their friends and having
fun. Many students have already lost internships, jobs, and
scholarships to carelessness in what they post or allow friends to post
on their profiles." -Albert Testani
