Activity 1:

Now that we've read the whole poem of "The Night Before Christmas," let's practice matching rhymes using another section of the poem.
Look at the sentences below.  Find the word rhyme that best matches the sentence.

His eyes - how they twinkled! his dimples how
merry/hairy/berry

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a
dairy/cherry/carry

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a
 cow/bow/dough

And the beard of his chin was as white as the

row/bow/snow

Activity 2:

Now that you've learned about rhymes, try making your own poem!

In the first part, you will find the beginnings to sentences.  Add words from the list below to make the AABB rhyme scheme.

Here are some words to choose from, but not every word will be used:

  • run
  • lay
  • same
  • fun
  • name
  • done
  • play

Saturday is my favorite day,
I like to invite my friends over to ;
Hide and seek is my favorite game,
I have too many hiding places to !
Hiding high in a tree is so much ,
But if somebody finds me, I better !

Extra credit!

By this point, you've made your own guided poem.  Now, try to make a poem of your own using the AABB rhyme scheme!

Here are some tips to get you started:
- Write about a topic that interests you, like sports, music, or your favorite holiday
- Keep it short.  Six lines will be perfect.
- Practice reading it aloud to a friend or family member.

Bring in your finished poem the next time we meet to read to the class for extra credit!
