                                  Miguel and Ana's move

Miguel and Ana were unhappy in their last apartment. The apartment

had only one bedroom and the kitchen was very small. They wanted an

apartment with two bedrooms and a large kitchen. They looked in the

newspaper and talked to friends. Finally, they found an apartment they

liked in the newspaper classified section . They called a landlord and asked

him questions about the apartment, rent, utilities, security deposit and

house rules. They scheduled an appointment to go and see that apartment.

They signed a lease and paid a security deposit. Miguel and Ana packed

their clothes, books and kitchen items into boxes. Miguel rented a small

truck. On moving day, several of their friends helped them move.

 VOCABULARY:

A landlord is the owner of a house, apartment or real estate which is rented or leased to an individual or business, who is called a tenant.

A security deposit is money that the tenant pays to the landlord. It provides monetary security to the landlord, in case of damage to the apartment or failure by the tenant to comply with the agreement (such as moving out before the lease ends). The tenant receives the deposit back at the end of the lease, minus any deductions for repairs / restoration.

A lease is a legal document, but can be an oral arrangement, which confers a right on one person (called a tenant or lessee) to possess property belonging to another person (called a landlord or lesser to the exclusion of the owner landlord. The relationship between the tenant and the landlord is called a tenancy, and the right to possession by the tenant is sometimes called a leasehold interest. A lease can be for a fixed period of time (called the term of the lease) but may be terminated sooner. The consideration for the lease is called rent or the rental.
