The Simple Present tense

The simple present tense expresses daily habits or usual activities.
The simple present tense is used for events or situations that exist always, usually,
or routinely in the past, present, and future.

If  you take a look at the table with the verb drink (previous page), you will notice that after he, she, it (3rd person singular) verb drink has a final -s. Sometimes, adding the final -s changes spelling of the verb. These are the spelling rules for the 3rd person singular of the simple present tense.


wear - wears
put - puts
drink - drinks
To make a simple present verb 3rd person singular,
you usually add only -s.

study - studies
cry - cries


pay - pays
buy - buys
End of verb: consonant + -y
Spelling: change y to i, add -es

End of verb: vowel + -y
Spelling: add -s

push - pushes
teach - teaches
kiss - kisses
fix - fixes
End of verb: -sh, -ch, -ss, -x
Spelling: add -es

have - has
go - goes
do - does
The 3rd person singular forms of have, go and do are irregular.
