Cladonia rei

 

Squamules persistant or dissapearing. Green above and white below. Either esorediate or granularly sorediate. Podetia sometimes simple and pointed but usually with small, shallow cups at the tips. Margins of cups entire or with short apothecial stalks. Surface of podetia corticate at base but mostly ecorticate with granular soredia. Thallus with homosekikaic acid and accessory fumarprotocetraric acid (P+ red). Found in temperate forests on sandy soil of fields, along roadsides, on rotting logs, and thin soil over rocks. This specimen was collected from the base of an eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) in the secondary succession forest area.
