Hypotrachyna afrorevoluta

 

Mineral-grey foliose lichen.  lobes forming deep sinuses ( this genus commonly known as the loop lichens) laminal sorediate pustules. Lower surface centrally black becoming brownish toward the margins with simple rhizines that are sparsely dichotomously branched. Cortex with atranorin (K+ pale yellow) medulla with gyrophoric acid (C+ pink/red).Found in eastern North American temperate forests growing on trees. This sample was collected from a sugar maple (Acer saccharum) in the secondary succession forest area.
