Phaeocalicium curtisii

Single ascocarp arising from Rhus thyphina. Spores 2 or one celled, brown and ellipsoid.  Spores  10-15 X 4-5 microns. Some appearing ornamented and some appearing smooth. Found on the branches of staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina) this pinhead lichen will appear as just that, many tiny black pinheads. This small ascomycetous pinhead lichen is found only on the young branches of staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina). Since staghorn sumac is more commonly found growing in edge habitats this species is more common on the edge of secondary succession forests, which is where this species was collected.
