Brown, fine-lobed foliose lichen. Whitish marginal soralia containing finely granular soredia brown when dry, bright green when wet. Lower surface black with branched. No lichen substances.Found in northern temperate forests mostly on trees but occasionally on rocks. This species is found in both the secondary succession and climax forest areas. The sample pictured above was collected from a white ash (Fraxinus americana) in the secondary succession forest area.
