There are many causes as to why we are having a water shortage here are a few everyday household problems that contribute to the problem…can you think of anymore?

  • When washing dishes by hand, people let the water run while rinsing. Instead, fill on sink with the wash water and the other with the rinse water.
  • Evaporative coolers require a seasonal maintenance checkup. For more efficient cooling, check your evaporative cooler  annually.
  • When a sprinkler is running at times it gets out of control and waters everything else but the grass! Try checking your sprinkler systems frequently and adjust the sprinklers so that only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk or in the street.
  • Washing a load of clothes that may not fill up the entire washer but yet, the setting isn’t changed or can’t be changed. The water fills to its natural filling level. Consider only running your washing machine and dishwasher only when they are full or set the setting to a lower load. You can save nearly 1000 gallons of water by doing so!

  • Avoid planting turf in areas that are hard to water such as steep inclines and isolated strips along sidewalks and driveways.
  • Plan old evaporation or dirty water that needs to be drained and refilled. Consider installing covers on pools and spas and checking for leaks around your pumps.
  • Garbage disposals not only require energy but water to flush them out. Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Compost instead and save gallons every time!
  • Watch your calendar’s and avoid planting at a dry time of the year/ Plant during the spring or fall when the watering requirements are lower.
  • Don’t turn the tap on a lot during the day for drinking water. Instead keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap for cold drinks, so that every drop goes down you and not down the drain.
  • Don’t water the plants during the hot points of the day. Try to minimize evaporation by watering during the early morning hours, when temperatures are cooler and winds are lighter.

  • Washing food in the sink with running water. Wash your produce in the sink or a pan that is partially filled with water instead of running water from the tap.
  • Spraying your driveway free of the dirt and debris. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway or sidewalk and save 80 gallons of water every time!
  • Don’t just use plain soil; it soaks up the water too fast leaving it dry! Instead consider using a layer of organic mulch around plants to reduce evaporation and save hundreds of gallons of water a year.
  • Check your showerhead! If your shower can fill a one-gallon bucked in less than 20 seconds, then replace it with a water efficient showerhead.
  • Wasting water happens to frequently. Consider reusing your water like the water cycle. Collect the water you use for rinsing produce and reuse it to water household plants!
  • We’re more likely to notice leaky faucets indoors, but don’t forget to check outdoor faucets, pipes and hoses for leaks.
  • A leaky pool - Periodically check your pool for leaks if you have an automatic refilling device.
