Hurricane Katrina was one of the worst natural disasters to hit the United States. Thousands of people were uprooted and placed in shelters and homes around the country. We need to do all we can do to help the people rebuild their lives and prepare ourselves for future disasters. Although Katrina will be recorded as the most destructive storm in terms of economic losses, it did not exceed the human losses and costs such as the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, which killed as many as 6,000-12,000 people and led to almost complete destructuon of coastal Galveston. |
