General Mills Advances to Third on IDG’s Computerworld Best Places to Work in IT List

06/26/2008

IDG’s Computerworld magazine today named General Mills as the third best place to work in information technology (IT) in the United States. General Mills has made the Computerworld Best Places to Work in IT list for nine years, moving up four spots to No. 3 this year from No. 7 in 2007.

“We’re thrilled that Computerworld recognizes our commitment to being an employer of choice,” said Terry Brown, General Mills vice president of Information Systems (IS). “We focus on shaping a culture that is highly performance driven — yet, at the same time, is responsive to employee needs and promotes family and work/life balance.”

General Mills introduced several programs that boosted the company’s performance on Computerworld’s survey this year, such as a benefit that allows employees to phase back to work following a leave of absence, a sabbatical program and flex vacation options. General Mills IS department also built on the success of new hire forums with new experienced hire and manager forums, which help employees network and transition into new roles at the company.

Since 1994, Computerworld’s annual Best Places to Work in IT feature has ranked the top 100 work environments for technology professionals, based on a comprehensive survey regarding company offerings in categories such as benefits, diversity, career development, training and retention.

“Being among the Best Places to Work in IT means crafting a blend of employee advantages that includes the potential for flexible hours, competitive pay, excellent benefits, a supportive leadership environment, opportunities for ongoing training and advancement, and ultimately, the feeling that you'd like to stay with the company a long, long time,” said Scot Finnie, editor in chief of Computerworld.
