What really is a simile?

light In class the other day we read a story together called My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks. There is a reason we read this book together! This book contains soooooo many silly similes.

Defintion of a simile:
A simile is when two things are compared using like or as. The two things being compared are not normally alike.

Examples:

My sister is as sweet as pie.

John eats like a pig.




Now let's look at a few examples of simles in our text we read:

He is as fun as a party favor. But sometimes he's as stubborn as a knot in a rope.
 
These two sentences are both simile sentences. They both use as in the sentences.
My mommy is as soft as the softest fluff and as bright as the brightest light.
This sentence is a simile sentence. The sentence contains the word as. 
My brother is as amusing as a game of marbles and as strong as a bat.
This sentence is a simile sentence because it compares two things (brother and marbles). The sentence contains the word as.
My baby brother is as sweet as candy.
This sentence is a simile sentence because it compares two things (baby brother and candy) using as.
My dog sleeps like a log.
This sentence is a simile sentence. It compares two things (dog and long) using like.
