On the afternoon of Wednesday, September 8, 2010, Jan Čapek gave an informative PowerPoint presentation about his extensive art education, his transition from school to a career in the field of Industrial Design and the many awards he's received for his designs.
Mr. Čapek attended the very competitive High School of Decorative Arts in Turnov, where he studied the engraving and cutting of precious stones. From there, he went to the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague where he studied porcelain and metallurgy design. At one point, he spent some time in New York City cutting precious stones for prestigious companies like Tiffany & Co. and Henry Winston. After returning from New York, he changed his major to Industrial Design and continued his studies. He won an award for his final student project by designing unique and visually-appealing packaging for Mattoni mineral water bottles.
He won an award for designing the WashMan for Eureka, a combination washing machine and dryer marketed toward single men. He specializes in unique designs that are both functional and beautiful. He designed a collapsible lighting fixture that provides indirect light when collapsed and more direct light when unfolded, armchairs using pressed paper with epoxy and 2 mm steel, and continued to design sports bottles for Mattoni. Some of his more beautiful pieces included a teapot set that includes functionality with design and his signature Pin Up Vase.
