Reflections to NETS Standards for Teachers and Students
The category I chose to write about and discuss for the NETS Standard
for Teachers is the fourth standard, "Assessment and Evaluation".
I feel as a future teacher that this standard is important
because teachers are constantly evaluating students' work and I don't
agree with standardized tests as a form of assessment. I feel
that there are other ways to determine if students understand the
material and if they have retained any of the information that was
taught to them. Since I don't agree with testing, I feel it is
necessary for me to be competent in this area so I can better assess
students through technology.
By using technology to assess and evaluate students'
performance, the pressure of standardized tests have been lifter from
the students. Teachers will provide programs on the computer that
will analyze, interpret, and collect data of students' work and
determine the learning outcome of each individual student. This
will also help teachers determine the different levels and learning
styles of the students in the classroom.
Some ideas that the teacher could do, would be to
have students do projects using the computer such as power point,
publisher, etc. to help them show the teacher that they are
knowledgeable in that subject area. Teachers should also provide
multiple technology programs so that the students can find one that
they are comfortable in, which helps students excel in specific subject
areas without felling stressed about taking a test to determine their
understanding.
Student Standards:
The category I chose to write about and discuss for
the NETS Standard for Students in the fourth standard, "Technology
Communication Tools". I feel that this standard will benefit
students because it is important for students to be able to work well
with peers in a group. The students should be able to collaborate
as a group using several different technology programs and present a
topic to the rest of the class. This focuses on peer interaction
and public speaking, both of which I feel is very important in
classrooms.
The technology tools that the students will use will
help them enhance their learning capabilities and broadens their
learning styles. Students will also be encouraged to be creative
and use tools that they might not be fully comfortable with to gain
comfort and understanding. I feel this standard is very important
for students because they need to be nudged out of their level of
comfort to try something new.
Some ideas of what the teacher could do to help her
students develop competency under this standard would be to teach the
students of different programs that they could use that would help them
enhance their understanding and have them continue practicing with that
program to establish understanding. Teachers could also encourage
students to explore different programs on their own so they find
something that interests them, which leads to understanding and
competency. One last idea for teachers would be to be available
for students to come talk to you about any problems they are faced with
based on the technology program they are using.
