Academic Programs
Reading: The 100 Book
Challenge
One of the most significant ways our elementary
students develop their reading skills is through the 100 Book Challenge, an
innovative reading program featuring 35,000 color-coded books geared to the
student's individual reading level. In Binghamton schools as well as school
districts nationwide, 100 Book Challenge has proven to be a highly successful
tool in building students' skills and encouraging them to read.
Reading Recovery
For
first-graders who are having difficulties with reading, we offer the Reading
Recovery program, which provides intensive, one-on-one instruction and
intervention.
Six Traits Writing
Program
Teachers in grades K-10 districtwide are currently being
trained in this new program and will soon implement it in their classrooms. The
program breaks the writing process down into six essential traits and helps
students improve their writing skills.
Academic Intervention Services
(AIS)
This federally-supported program is designed to provide
additional instructional support for students who are struggling and need extra
help. Students are identified by the results of frequent assessments, classroom
progress and teacher recommendations. AIS is usually provided in small groups
of students in the same grade, given either before or after school or inbedded
during the day during block time, study hall, etc.
Enrichment: The Challenge
Program
The Challenge program provides enriched learning
activities for all students, above and beyond what classroom teachers can
typically do. Challenge teachers bring in added resources, coordinate special
projects and plan related field trips to enhance the learning experience. The
program also provides challenging instruction outside the regular classroom for
approximately 600 gifted and talented elementary and middle school
students.
pARTners Program: Parents & Children
Learning Together
The pARTners program is an arts-based program
committed to creating positive learning experiences and encouraging parent
involvement. Parents and children can attend a variety of arts-based classes
together once each week in the evening over an 11-week session. The program is
now offered at three of our elementary schools, and future plans call for it to
be offered district-wide. For more information
