  1. Why was the Underground Railroad called “the Underground Railroad”?
  2. Around what time period did the Underground Railroad start?  In what year did the Underground Railroad get its name?
  3. Who were the main conductors and what did they do?
  4. Why was it important to keep the Underground Railroad looking nice?  Where did they get the money to keep it looking nice?
  5. How many different routes were there to travel?
  6. What were the terms used in the Underground Railroad and what did they mean?
  7. What were Vifilance committees and where were they?
Use the resources on the internet and from the book list provided to answer questions about Harriet Tubman
  1. What was Harriet Tubman’s life like growing up?
  2. What lead her to play such an important role in the Underground Railroad?
  3. What was her actual role?  How many years did Harriet act as a conductor for the Underground Railroad?
  4. Approximately how many slaves did she help escape to freedom?
  5. How many trips did Harriet make to the south?
  6. How many slaves got caught under Harriet's escort?
  7. Harriet was very clever in escape plans, what are four things she did in order to ensure success?
Work in groups of two to three and create a map of the routes used in the Underground Railroad.  Make sure to color code each one differently and label it.
