The Catcher in the Rye is a novel written by J.D. Salinger in 1951.

Genre: Bildungsroman (coming-of-age novel) 

Narrator: Holden Caulfield from a psychiatric hospital.  The events of the novel are in the past and have happened months before Holden tells the story.
