In English Language Arts we are studying compound words. Compound words
are two of more words that when joined form another word. Compound
words are useful to practice fluency in ready and to develop better
reading comprehension.
Since Halloween is around the corner and students are ready for
the festivity, we are learning and practicing our compound words and
other language skills with Halloween poems.
Some ways to help your child find compound words are:
Read the whole word.
Cover one part of the word and read the uncovered part. Does this part have its own meaning?
If the answer is yes, cover the word that you just read and read the
other part. If that part also has a meaning of its own, you have a
compound word.
Try words such as: homework, playground, etc.
Other ways to help your child is to read various poems and children books.
Some books that I recommend from the public library are:
The Random House of Poetry, selected by Jack Prelutsky.
Wallpaper from Space, by Daniel Pinkwater.
We are in Big Trouble Blackboard Bear, by Martha Alexander
Thank you very much for your support. If you have questions about
