The Candor Alternative School is collecting 1.2 million beads to commemorate those who died in both the genocides of Rwanda and Darfur. Inspired by the Whitwell Middle School in Tennessee, which collected millions of paper clips symbolizing the lives lost in the Holocaust, students and teachers at The Candor Alternative School seek to raise awareness about the terrible atrocities which have happened more recently in Africa.
So far we have collected 850,000 beads, but we would like more people to get involved. Our hope is to not only collect beads, but organize bead stringing days among different school districts, helping to string the 1.2 million beads together in a single strand to be presented as a traveling memorial.
