Let's look at the verb poder.  Poder means "to be able to" or "can."  You use this verb quite often, especially when asking if you can do something.  For example, when you ask "Can I go to the bathroom" you use the verb poder to say "Puedo ir al baño."  

Poder is a boot verb.  We've seen other boot verbs, like the verb querer.
 

First, read the following senences from Doki Descubre, find the verb poder in the sentences, and write it out in the space provided.
  • Así no puedo pintar mi árbol.    check answer
  • Pero puedes crearla mezclando la pintura azul con la pintura amarilla.    check answer
  • Puedes crear el marrón mezclando la pintura naranja con un poquito de pintura negra.    check answer
We see that in the verb poder, the "o" changes to an "ue."  Look at the chart below to see all of the present tense conjugations for poder.

Yo puedo Nosotros podemos
Tú puedes Vosotros podéis
Usted puede Ustedes pueden
Èl / Ella puede Ellos / Ellas pueden

** Notice that the stem does not change to "pued" in the nosotros and vosotros forms.


Let's do a little practic with the verb poder.  Select the appropriate form of the verb for each sentence.
  1. Doki mezcar los colores.  
  2. En la clase de arte yo  pintar mucho.   
  3. Mis amigos ir al cine el domingo.   
  4. Nosotros  pasar tiempo con amigos durante el fin de semana.   
  5. Tú  hablar con amigos durante el almuerzo.   
  6. Vosotros practicar el fútbol después de la escuela.   

Now write 4 sentences telling what you and your friends can or cant' do in school and your different classes.
