El Subjuntivo / The Subjunctive -

The subjunctive is not a tense; rather, it is a mood.

Thus far, we have studied tenses in the indicative mood.  The indicative mood is used to express facual information, certainty and objectivity.

    Example:
I am going to the mall.
                    The boy is short.

The subjunctive is used to express things such as doubt, uncertainty and subjectivity.  It is used when the speaker is expressing a subjective opinion.  (subjective: existing in the mind)

    Example:
I doubt that he has a million dollars.
I hope I win the lottery.
