Winter



Winter weather in Syracuse is very cold. Winter comes after fall and before spring. There is a lot of snow that falls from the sky. During the winter months, many holidays are celebrated. People enjoy going outside to build a snowman, but they also like coming inside to relax by a warm fire and drink hot cocoa. During the winter, people also like to ski, snowboard, go sledding and watch basketball.

Vocabulary Terms
December- the twelfth month of the year
January- the first month of the year
February- the second month of the year
cold- a type of weather when the temperature is very low
snowman- a figure that is created out of large balls of snow, coal, a scarf and a hat
snow- a type of weather where the temperature is below freezing (32 degrees fahrenheit)
snowflake- an individual piece of snow. No two snowflakes are alike
Christmas- a Christian holiday on December 25th. People celebrate with gifts, stockings and Santa Claus
New Year's- a holiday celebrated on January 1st. It marks the beginning of a new year
Hanukkah- a Jewish holiday. People celebrate with menorahs, dreidels and special foods.
Kwanzaa- an African holiday that is celebrated in the winter months.
icicle- a long piece of ice that forms when water freezes
