Insect Vocabulary Words

Insect Small, air-breathing arthropods.  Their bodies are divided into three different parts. They usually have six legs and four wings. 
Thorax The middle section of an insect's body where the legs and wings are attached. It is under the head.
Abdomen It is the back part of an insect's body. It holds most of the insect's internal organs such as the stomach and intestines.
Metamorphosis A major change in the form or structure of insects that happens as the insect becomes an adult.
Larva A very young form of an insect that looks like a worm. For example, the larva of a butterfly is called a caterpillar.
Pupa An insect that is in the stage of development between the larva and adult. It is usually a protective cocoon or hardened case. In this stage, a lot of
changes occur.
                 
Complete Metamorphosis Type of metamorphosis where insects go through four (4) life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Larvae are very different in the form from the adult.
Nymph A young insect that looks like an adult insect except that they do not have wings, or only small ones.
Gradual Metamorphosis Type of metamorphosis in which an insect hatches from an egg and then goes through several nymphal stages. Each nymphal stage looks like a small version of the adult but getting bigger with age.
