: Read the defintions for each word below.  Different forms of the word include nouns, compound nouns, transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, verb phrases, idioms, and related adjectives.

blow



noun
1. a sudden, hard stroke with a hand, fist, or weapon: a blow to the head.

2. blow dryer: a hand-held electric blower that can blow warm air onto the hair, used for styling hair.

3. blow fish: a puffer fish.

verb
1. to produce or emit a current of air, as with the mouth. Example: "Blow on your hands to warm them."

2. to move along, carried by or as by the wind. Example: "Dust seemed to blow through every crack in the house."

3. (of a horn, trumpet, etc.) to give out sound.

4. to clear or empty by forcing air through. Example: "Try blowing your nose."

5. to burst, melt, burn out, or destroy by exploding, overloading, etc.: to blow a tire; blow a fuse.

6. (Informal) to spend money on; to waste or lose.

7. blow out: to become extinguished. Example: "The candles blew out at once."

8. blow up: to explode; to fill with air or inflate. Example: "He blew up the balloon."



brake



noun
1. a device for slowing or stopping a vehicle, usually by means of friction.

verb
1. to slow or stop by means of a brake.

2. to use a brake.




break



noun
1. an act or instance of breaking; disruption or separation of parts; fracture; rupture. Example: "There was a break in the window."

2. (pool) the opening play, in which the cue ball is shot to scatter the balls.

3. breaker or curcuit breaker: a switch that automatically interrupts the flow of electric current if the current exceeds the limit

verb
1. to smash, split, or divide into parts violently; reduce to pieces or fragments. Example: "He broke a vase."

2. to fracture a bone of (some part of the body). Example: "He broke his leg."

3. to infringe, ignore, or act contrary to (a law, rule, promise, etc.). Example: "She broke her promise."

4. (pool) to cause (racked billiard balls) to scatter by striking with the cue ball.

5. break up: to end a personal relationship. Example: "Bob and Mary broke up last month."

6. break up: to disrupt; upset (such as cell phone reception).



fall



noun
1. an act or instance of falling or dropping from a higher to a lower place or position.

2. the season of the year that comes after summer and before winter; autumn.

3. falls: a cataract or waterfall.

verb
1. to drop or descend under the force of gravity.

2. to collapse to the ground.

3. to pass into some physical, mental, or emotional condition: to fall asleep; to fall in love.

4. fall for: to fall in love with.



fly



noun
1. a strip of material sewn along one edge of a garment opening for concealing buttons, zippers, or other fasteners.

2. any dipterous insect, especially the housefly, characterized by active flight.

verb
1. to move through the air using wings.

2. to travel in an aircraft or spacecraft.

3. (Informal) to be acceptable, believable, or feasible. Example: "It seemed like a good idea, but it just wouldn't fly."



light



noun
1. something that makes things visible or affords illumination
an illuminating agent or source, as the sun, a lamp, or a beacon.

2. the illumination from the sun; daylight. Example: "We awoke at the first light.
"

3. spiritual illumination or awareness; enlightenment.

4. nightlight: a usually dim light kept burning at night, as in a child's bedroom.

5. lightning: a brilliant electric spark discharge in the atmosphere, occurring within a thundercloud, between clouds, or between a cloud and the ground.

verb
1. to set burning, as a candle, lamp, fire, match, or cigarette; kindle; ignite.

2. to ignite a cigar, cigarette, or pipe for purposes of smoking (sometimes followed by up). Example: "He took out a pipe and lighted up before speaking."

adj.
1. of little weight; not heavy. Example: "It was as light as a feather."

2. pale, whitish, or not deep or dark in color: a light blue.



play



noun
1. a dramatic performance, as on the stage.

2. in sports, a plan of action employed after a timeout or in particular situations.

verb
1. to exercise or employ oneself in diversion, amusement, or recreation.

2. to perform (music) on an instrument.

3. to take part or engage in a game.

4. to contend against in a game.

5. play ball: to begin or continue playing a game (such as baseball).



run



noun
1. an act or instance, or a period of running. Example: "I went for a five-minute run before breakfast."

2. a series of unravelled stitches, esp. in stockings or tights.

3. runway: a paved or cleared strip on which planes land and take off.

verb
1. to go quickly by moving the legs more rapidly than at a walk and in such a manner that for an instant in each step all or both feet are off the ground.

2. to depart quickly; take to flight; flee or escape: to run from danger.

3. to flow, as a liquid. Example: "Let the water run before you drink it."

4. to melt and flow or drip. Example: "Wax ran down the burning candle."

5. (of drivers) to disregard a red traffic light and continue ahead without stopping.

6. run away: to flee or escape; leave a place of confinement or control with the intention of never returning. Example: "He ran away from home three times."

adj.
1. runny: dripping. Example: "I have a runny nose."



space



noun
1. an interval of distance or time between two points, objects, or events.

2. a blank portion or area.

3. the region beyond the earth's atmosphere containing the other planets of the solar system, stars, galaxies, etc; universe.

4. space bar: a horizontal bar on a typewriter keyboard that is depressed in order to resume typing one space to the right.

verb
1. to place or arrange at intervals or with spaces between.



split



noun
1. a crack, tear, or fissure caused by splitting.

2. an ice-cream dish made from sliced fruit, usually a banana, and ice cream, and covered with syrup and nuts.

3. the feat of separating the legs while sinking to the floor, until they extend at right angles to the body, as in stage performances or gymnastics.

3. (bowling) an arrangement of the pins remaining after the first bowl in two separated groups, so that a spare is difficult.

verb
1. to divide into distinct parts or portions (often followed by up). Example: "We split up our rations."

2. to divide or separate from end to end or into layers. Example: "She split the log in two."
