Vocabulary Word Definition
flag
The flag is a symbol of the United States. One of the first flags featured a circle wtih 13 stars and 13 stripes that represent the thirteen colonies. Our flag today has 50 stars that represents all 50 states, still with 13 stripes.

fireworks
Fireworks are a small device that explodes in the sky to make a display of light and noise. They can be very colorful.
Declaration of Independence
The document that was signed that announced the thirteen colonies were no longer a part of the British Empire. They were 13 idependent states.

July 4th
An important date to remember that marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
United States

freedom
Not being held by something. You are able to make your own choices.
colonies
An area that is controlled by or belongs to a country and is usually far away from that country.

England
A country in Europe that was controlling the thirteen colonies.

independent
Not being controlled by others.
thirteen
The number of colonies that were under British control, but then were declared states after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
patriotic
Showing great support or love for your country.
