Two Clauses of the First Amendment concern the relationship of the government to religion:

1. Free Exercise Clause:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"


2. Establishment Clause:

Prohibits the government from endorsing a national religion and financially supporting it.



What about religion in public schools?

"Public school students may have the right to pray on their own in a non-disruptive fashion and schools may teach about religion as a part of  objective instruction, but public schools must not sponsor religious worship"
