My Home
Aleutian homes are much like
my old home back in New York. There is indoor plumbing and
strong windows and roof to protect us from the harsh weather. A
great deal of the homes here are log cabins. The homes were not
always like this though. In the past they lived in "barbara"
which were traditional Aleut winter homes. These homes were
partially underground in order to keep the occupants dry from the rain,
warm and sheltered from the high winds. The families lived in
large groups in these homes because family was an important aspect of
thier culture. Today these homes have changed dramatically.
However they still are strong and have beautiful views of the
Bering Sea or the Pacific Ocean.
