The
Problem:Global
Warming
- What is Global Warming? Global Warming
refers to the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface
air and oceans in recent decades.
- Why is global warming happening? A major reason
is because humans are sending greenhouse gases into the air.
- How do greenhouse gases effect the Earth's
temperature? Greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere and trap
energy from the sun. We need these gases because they keep our planet at a livable
temperature. But the global world today is producing to many of these gases and
our planet is over heating.
- What are humans doing to send these gases into the
air? Humans send greenhouse gases into the air whenever they burn fossil
fuels like driving in a car or flying in a plane, whenever they heat their
homes, watch TV, use an air conditioner, turn on a light, play a video game,
listen to a stereo, wash their cloths, or even use a microwave. Big factories
and power plants also have a great effect on the Earth's climate. Everything
from clothing to plastic bags are manufactured somewhere and adding to global
warming.
- Are there other causes? Yes, deforestation or
cutting down forests is speeding up the process.
- Why? Trees absorb carbon
dioxide, a green
house gas, from the air.
- What effects besides the Earth warming up can global
warming have? When the Earth heats up the weather becomes more intense.
There are major droughts, hurricanes, and storms. In warmer temperatures people
are more likley to die from heat exaustion, dehydration, and disease. Also the
sea levels are rising which means that if something is not done the world will
be losing portions of land and animals will be losing their natural habitats and
may die as well.
Why is global warming a major issue in
Micronesia?
As
the Earth warms and ice caps melt, sea levles rise.
As you know Micronesia
is a chain of small islands in the South Pacific.
The sea level has risen
21.4mm every year since 2001.
In the past five years global warming has
already claimed one of Micronesia's islets south of Pohnpei and split another
nearby islet .
If the sea
level continues to rise, MIcronesians will continue to lose their land and will
be forced to relocate.
