Prepositions of Place & Direction

Did you notice in the reading that some special words are used to explain where to look in order to find other states, countries or bodies of water?  These special words, and others like them, are called prepositions.

Prepositions link other words in the sentences and show relationships. Prepositions are the words that indicate time, place, direction and location.

In this lesson, you will learn about some prepositions of place or location. Usually, prepositions show place or location in the physical world. 
These prepositions help to describe were to look in order to find where a specific thing is located.

For example:
Canada is above New York State.

New York State is to the left of  Vermont

In the reading about New York State, there are several prepositions of place. Each preposition indicates where to look to find something in relation to something else. There are many prepositions of place but this lesson looks at four: above, below, beside, next to, between, to the right of  and to the left of.
