Today's Thanksgiving Traditions

Travel
On Thanksgiving, many people like to spend time with family. Many families live far away from each other, so they have to travel long distances by car, train, or airplane to come together. Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year!

The Wishbone
The wishbone is a bone found in a turkey. It is connected to the breast meat found in the turkey's chest. Once the meat has been removed and the wishbone has dried and become brittle, two people each hold an end of the bone, make a wish, and pull. The person who breaks off the largest piece of the bone receives their wish!

Helping Others
Many people like to help out others who are less fortunate, or do not have as much, as themselves. On Thanksgiving day, some people volunteer at homeless shelters to help serve food. Others donate items such as food, clothing, or money to shelters or food drives.

Football (American)
On Thanksgiving day every year, there are professional football games in the afternoon that many families watch on television! It is typical for the men in the family to sit down together and watch the football games after eating dinner. However, many women also join in!

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
In the morning on Thanksgiving day, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is held in New York City. Each year the parade is televised so families across the country can watch. The parade includes marching bands, floats, songs and performances from Broadway musicals, dancing, and giant helium-filled balloons in the form of cartoon characters (it is usually several hours long)! The parade always ends with Santa Clause! This marks the beginning of the Christmas season!

The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade was held in 1924.

Here is the 86th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (2012)!
