Background Information & Results of the Erie Canal Project:
General Information about the Erie Canal: The
Erie Canal is a man-made waterway that runs from Buffalo, New York, to
Albany, New York, constructed from 1817 to 1825 (8 years) (eriecanalway.org). The
waterway made it possible for vessels to carry goods from the great
lakes, through Buffalo to Albany. From Albany, ships could carry
goods from Albany to New York City on the Hudson River. The
building of the Erie Canal resulted in enormous economic growth, with
settlements, towns, and cities forming along the ports of the canal,
such as the cities of Rochester, Rome, and Amsterdam. Aside from
goods, the canal could also transport passengers, and continues to
today. Due to the invention of the automobile, locomotive, and
airplane, the canal is no longer the primary form of transporting
goods, but it continues to remain in operation today.
