What are "contractions"?

A contraction is a word made by shortening and combining two words. Words like can't (can + not), don't (do + not), and I've (I + have) are all contractions.
A simplified way of speaking by combining two words into one, using an apostrophe to replace the letters that are lost when combining.
Contractions are used informally in the English language, and are not to be used for writing in essays or published works.
Used in conversation, dialogue, and songs.

In this example "can't" (cannot) and "I'll" (I will) are the contractions.
The apostrophe (this symbol: ' ) in the word "can't" replaces the "o" for "not," whereas the apostrophe for "I'll" replaces the "w" and "i" for the word "will".

Here, "would've" represents use of the past perfect tense by combining "would" and "have"; "didn't" is the combination of "did" and "not"; and "I'll" combines "I" with "will".
The apostrophe for "would've" replaces the "h" and "a" of the word "have".
The apostrophe for "didn't" replaces the "o" of the full word "not".
The apostrophe for "won't" replaces the "o" of "not," but it remains an irregular contraction because "will" changes to "wo".
