How do we make the past tense?



Now let's look at the irregular verbs in red!
I am we are
you are you are
he/she/it is he/she/it/ is

This is the present tense of the verb "to be."  For example:  I go to the store.


I was we were
you were you were
he/she/it was they were

This is the past tense of the verb "to be."  For example:  I went to the store.

The other irregular verbs on the verb page are easy:

present tense   =>  past tense

to go => went
to meet => met
to eat => ate
to tell => told
to catch => caught
to make => made
to get => got
What do you notice about the other irregular verbs on the verb page in red?  
Answer: There is just one word for the past tense!

Here are three more irregular verbs from the dialogue:
present tense   =>  past tense

reply => replied
say => said
die => died
Notice how the past tense is formed for the verb reply.
Answer: Change the -y to -i and add -ed.

Why don't we do this for the -y in "say?"
Why don't we add -ed to make the past tense of "die?"
Answer: We never have three vowels in a row in English!
