*Lets take a closer look at the text to see how the states are alphabetized, or arranged in alphabetical order.

Question: What did you notice about the order of the states?

When a group of words are alphabetized, that means they are arranged in alphabetical order from A to Z.

As seen in this song, all of the states that start with A are listed first, followed by the states that start with B and so on.

Question: How did they know how to arrange or alphabetize the states that started with the same letter?

Answer: They looked at the next letter in the word and alphabatized it based on these letters.

Great job! If two words start with the same letter, we look at the next letter in the word to alphabetize it.

For example: A
laska and Arizona both start with A, so we have to look at the second letter in the word which is l and r. Since l comes before r in the alphabet, Alaska would be placed before Arizona.

This process would repeat if they had the same first and second letter, then we would look at the third letter.
