In
writing a travel brochure, we noticed that the writer uses several modal
verb phrases. (See the words highlighted in blue.)
Remember, these types of verbs are used to express the possibility(can) or a prediction(will) of a
particular action directly
to the reader.
Below are some sentences from different travel brochures.
Part 1
Select
the correct modal verb from the drop-down menu.
Then,
determine
whether the writer is expressing a suggestion or
a prediction.
Part 2
Complete
the sentence by linking
the 2 parts with the correct modal verb phrase. Remember, you
are speaking directly to the
reader.
FEATURE 2
In
writing a travel brochure, the author uses many imperative verbs. These are verbs that speak directly to the reader, or to "you." This is an important strategy in persuasive writing becuase it allows the author to tell "you" directly what "you" can do in a particular place. Notice that the author is speaking
directly to the reader even when he doesn't use the word "you." (See the
verbs in red.)
