Biomes are defined as the world's major communities. These classifications are made by looking at the plant and animal life that survive in that particular environment.  There are six main types of biomes on Earth: freshwater, marine, desert, forest, grassland, and tundra.  Where we live in Tasmania can be categorized under the grassland biome.  This biome, as its name states, is characterized as an area dominated by grasses rather than large shrubs or trees. There are two major divisions under this biome which are savanna and temperate grasslands.  Tasmania, along with other neighboring Australia areas, is considered to be a savanna region.

Tasmanis is also the home of many diverse vegeatation.  Below is a button grassmoor land.   it is considered a low vegetation dominated by sedges (grass-like plants) and heaths that usually grows in poorly drained sites.

Here are some common critters that we see here in Tasmania!

        Here are Tasmanian Devils.

To further a student's knowledge and interest about wombats, below is a book that you can share with your class.  This book tells about an adventure that a wombat has through its homeland Tasmania.

There is a vast range of vegetation throughout Tasmania.  The land can range from the heavily grazed grassland of the dry Midlands to the tall evergreen eucalypt forest and alpine heathland.

This is a eucalyptus tree.                          This is an alpine environment.
